What is mountain biking and why is it so popular?
Mountain biking, also known as MTB, is a discipline practised on trails, paths or specially designed tracks. Unlike road cycling, it is designed to handle a wide variety of terrains, including more technical sections, thanks to its wide tyres, suspension systems and reinforced frame.
For several years, mountain biking has continued to attract a growing audience. Its popularity comes from the freedom it provides and the wide range of experiences it offers. A ride can be sporty, relaxing or fun, depending on the chosen route and each rider’s ability level.
This activity also has the advantage of adapting to many different profiles. Beginners can progress at their own pace on easier routes, while more experienced riders can take on more technical challenges. The different mountain biking disciplines
Mountain biking comes in several disciplines, each offering a different experience:
Mountain bike touring is the most accessible form of riding. It focuses on discovering landscapes and building endurance on routes with varying levels of elevation.
Cross-country (XC) combines climbs and descents on varied circuits. This discipline is more physically demanding and endurance-focused.
Enduro combines uphill sections with timed technical descents. It requires strong bike-handling skills and excellent physical fitness.
Downhill (DH) is practised on specially designed tracks. The routes are more challenging, featuring berms, jumps and a variety of natural or artificial obstacles.
Electric mountain biking (e-MTB) makes this activity even more accessible. Thanks to electric assistance, riders can cover longer distances or tackle greater elevation gains while enjoying the scenery.
